Do you know your vegetables from your fruits? You may be surprised to learn that some ‘vegetables’ may actually be fruits.
So how can you tell the difference? In culinary terms, the difference is usually defined by taste. With fruits being sweeter and vegetables more savoury in taste. However, the answer is more scientific than you might think.
Botanically, fruit is defined as containing seeds and is developed from the flowering part of the plant. Whereas vegetables are developed from the roots, stems and leaves.
Here are some common ‘vegetables’ that are actually fruit:
Tomatoes
Peapods
Aubergine
Olives
Cucumber
Pumpkin
Avocado
So next time you do your weekly shop, lookout for these fruits, in the vegetable aisle!
