June is here and that means Summer has officially arrived! We’re celebrating by taking a look at some of the fruits that are coming into season this month and their various health benefits.

We will start with the Strawberry! A classic Summer fruit and a favourite at Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the Strawberry is the embodiment of British Summers. As well as being a great source of vitamins C and K, Strawbs provide a good dose of fibre, folic acid, manganese and potassium. They have been used to help with digestion, teeth whitening and skin conditions, while the fibre and fructose they contain can help to regulate blood sugar levels!

Next up, the delicious Gooseberry! The British Summer provides the perfect climate for growing juicy, tart Gooseberries. Sadly these little berries are often overlooked, despite their incredible flavour and many health benefits. Packed with vitamins and dietary fibre, Gooseberries also contain compounds and anti-oxidants that have been found to protect against ageing, neurological diseases and even cancer.

Another wonderful fruit that is just coming into season is the Apricot. These smooth, sweet, golden fruits are similar to a peach or a plum, and provide a plentiful supply of Vitamin C. Eating Apricots can help to keep your eyesight protected, and are thought to help with inflammation. Although fresh Apricots are best for your health, they can also be bought dried and canned all year round if you just can’t get enough!

Now for one of our favourites, the Blackcurrant! They may be tiny, but these berries really pack a punch! Often used as a diuretic to treat colds, flu and fevers, Blackcurrant seed oil also contains a type of omega-6 fatty acid that is said to help reduce joint pain, soreness and stiffness caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Their juice contains potent antioxidants that help to cut the oxidation of bad cholesterol which causes plaque build up in the arteries and is linked to heart disease. And of course, they taste great when made into jam!

Our final seasonal fruit is a bit of a funny one: the Tomato. Although Tomatoes are often thought of as being a vegetable and are most often used in savoury dishes and salads, they are technically a fruit and a powerful one too! Loaded with vitamins, nutrients and anti-oxidants, Tomatoes are good for your skin, your heart, your hair, your eyes and your kdineys. They have also been proven to help maintain strong bones and may even play a part in preventing heart attacks, strokes and several types of cancer. A Tomato a day keeps the Doctor away, as they say. Or ought to say anyway!
